KEYSER, WV – Thomas “Tom” Randall Shafer, 84, of Knobley Road, Keyser, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at the WM Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, MD, after a long illness.
Born on August 29, 1933 in Frederick, MD, the second of three children, he was a son of the late Archie T. and Emma J. (Ramsburg) Shafer. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Jennifer, a son, Timothy and a sister, Jane S. Greenwood.
Tom graduated from Columbia Tech Engineering/Drafting School in Washington, D.C. and attended the University of MD for a short time. He had a long career as a Printed Circuit Designer. He was a U.S. Army Korean veteran and a member of the 3rd Armored Division in Germany.
A very skilled woodcraftsman, he built many pieces of beautiful furniture for family and friends. He was also a skilled mechanic and there weren’t many things that he couldn’t fix.
He liked riding his four-wheeler and in his young years, riding his motorcycle. In his school days he played the tuba in the school band and later the string bass in the Bill Krantz Dance Band. One of his favorite things to do was to cut firewood in the fall. He loved animals, especially cats, and watching the birds in the backyard.
Surviving are his wife, Verna Jean Shafer, his son, Steven T. Shafer and wife Lisa; his two daughters, Leslie A. Bartlebaugh and husband Michael and Lori L. Stotelmyer and husband Frankie and his four grandchildren, Ashlyn Bartlebaugh, Jacob and Zachary Shafer and Marina Stotelmyer. He also leaves behind a brother, Richard Shafer and wife Zoe Ann; a brother-in-law, Ken Greenwood and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Short Gap, with Pastor Scott Knowton officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Omega and Alpha Cemetery on Knobley Road, where military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army Honor and Post 13 Veterans Honor Guards.
