Stephen Allen Modlin, 71, in Keyser, WV, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Born on September 10, 1954 in Euclid, Ohio, to the late Robert and Helen Modlin, Stephen grew up with a love of music, sports and reading. He graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington, VA in 1972 and he graduated from Shepherd College in 1978 with a degree in secondary education. He spent the next 37 years teaching history, coaching basketball and cheerleading at Musselman High School in Inwood, WV. He was always known for his love of history and beloved by the staff and students. In 1975 he met the love of his life, Kathy, in Keyser. They were married 3 years later and raised two children in Inwood, WV.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Perry), his sons Nathan and Isaac; two granddaughters Zoe and Opal; and sisters Barbara Kosman and Marilyn Bromley; nephews Bob, Morgan, and Patrick; and niece Jennifer. He was preceded in death by parents Robert and Helen, brother-in-law Cap Bromley and many beloved dogs.
There will be a celebration of life at The Candlewyck Inn, Keyser, WV on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Visitors will be received from 4-7pm. The family will hold celebrations of life in his two hometowns, Inwood and Arlington, at a later date.
