James Thomas Rutherford Jr.
Keyser, WV –“Tom” Rutherford, 78, of Keyser, West Virginia, formerly of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on August 3, 2020, at Piney Valley Nursing Home.
Tom was born February 15, 1942, to Jim and Martha Rutherford of Washington, DC. He was employed as a Federal Protective officer stationed at the D.C. Naval yard, where he was shot in the line of duty.
Tom enjoyed volunteering and upholding his club duties including Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, and Masons 28th degree lifetime Tyler and Shriners where he would drive children to Shriner’s hospital. He served as Sgt. of Arms Emeritus for the Sons of American Legion and lifetime member of Kensington Vol. Fire Dept., active in auxiliary for 25 years and volunteer of the year 1998. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Winchester, Va. He also drove an ambulance part time for Silver Spring Ambulance Service before being shot. He enjoyed playing Santa Claus at various organizations and bringing joy to those around him. He loved visits with children, grandchildren, and celebrating holidays with his family as well as the staff and families of Piney Valley Nursing home.
Tom is survived by his former wife, Mary Carter; Two daughters, June Bragg and Mary Racey. He was known as “Pop-Pop Tom” by his grandchildren Michael Bragg, Denver Claywell II, Kenneth Bragg, Clinton Claywell, Dustin Claywell, Robert Bragg, Laura Bragg; and numerous great grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 2:00 at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD. Pall Bearers will include: Terry Cox, Kevin Cox, Clinton Claywell, Dustin Claywell, Robert Bragg, Noah Duckworth, Destiny Claywell, and Karter Claywell.
