Edna Louise (Ashby) Crumbaugh

Carroll County, MD. – Edna Louise (Ashby) Crumbaugh of Oakmont Green, Carroll County, MD and formerly of New Creek, WV, died on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Carroll County General Hospital at the age of 95.

            Born May 17, 1925 in New Creek, WV, she was a daughter of the late George T. Ashby and Ethel P. (Steedman) Ashby. She was predeceased by a brother Thomas F. Ashby and two sisters, Mauda M. (Ashby) Grimes, Sara Jane (Ashby) Fout.

            Mrs. Crumbaugh was a graduate of Keyser High School Class of 1943. During World War II, she was employed by the U.S. Government at Newton D. Baker Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. At the close of the war, she attended and graduated from Potomac State College and was later employed by the Allegheny and Cumberland Gas Company. Attending college, she met and married Robert E. Crumbaugh, Jr. on February 27, 1947, and shortly thereafter moved to Huntington, WV. While her husband attended Marshall University, she worked for the government at the Rent Control Commission.

            She often remarked that she had achieved a valued education accompanying her husband as he pursued advance degrees. In her spare time, as she would say, she was able to raise three children and attend four institutions of higher learning: Marshall University, West Virginia University, Morris Harvey and University of Maryland.

            Never idle, as her children grew, she pursued her love of flowers to a part-time occupation with a local florist and continued there for over twenty-five years.

            Mrs. Crumbaugh could trace her Ashby family history to the earliest colonists of Virginia.

            In her later years, in the company of her husband of over 74 years, she enjoyed and expressed great pride in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

            Surviving are husband, Robert E. Crumbaugh; three children, Thomas Scott Crumbaugh and wife Kathleen of Upperco, MD, Susan Louise Willingham and husband Wayne of New Creek, WV, John Edward Crumbaugh and wife Wendy of Ramona, CA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Jennifer Darche, Stephanie Gamble, Katie Houdek, Robert Scott Crumbaugh, Allison Evans, Sara Allen, and Lukas and Kurt Crumbaugh; eight great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

            Interment will be at Duling Cemetery. Due to the pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
