Dr. Glenn Orrick Workman, Jr.

     Cresaptown, MD - Dr. Glenn Orrick Workman, Jr., 94, of Cresaptown, passed away peacefully at his home with his children and family members by his side on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.  

     Born on October 16, 1929, in Keyser, WV, he was the only son of the late Glenn Orrick Workman, Sr. and Mildred Martha (Barnard) Workman. He is also preceded in death by his wife Shirley Y. (Mills) Workman.

     Dr. Glenn O. Workman, Jr. graduated Keyser High School in 1947. A Bronze Palm Eagle Scout, he went on to earn an AA degree at Potomac State College and his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Biology at West Virginia University. in the field of Biology.  Other academic awards and accomplishments include:

Science Department Chair, ACM, 1968-92

Founder & chair, ACM Forestry Department, 1970-92

Received the Dr. Richard Johnson Environmental Education Award recipient for contributions at ACM, 2013

Founded & directed ACM Honors Program, 1986-1992

President, Maryland Collegiate Honor Society, 1990

Inducted into six Collegiate Honor Societies & National President, Phi Epsilon Phi. 1956

NFS Grant recipient for Cytogenetics Studies at North Dakota State University, 1962

Member, Potomac State College Board of Directors, 2000-05

Science Department Chair, East Stroudsburg State University, 1968

     Glenn’s life-long involvement in the sport of tennis led to recognition and honors as a successful coach, player and organizer. He served as Head Tennis Coach for Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland, and Assistant Coach at East Stroudsburg State University. His ACM teams achieved a 99-23-1 record over 9 seasons, including 3 State & 3 Regional Championships and trips to the National JUCO Championships in 1971, 76, & 79. Glenn coached the East Stroudsburg State University team to two PA State Championships, 1967 & 1968. In 1995, he was inducted into the NJCAA Men’s National Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame. The Maryland State and Region XX JUCO organizations named Glenn Coach of the Year several times. Glenn also received the Cumberland Dapper Dan Achievement Award for coaching in 1972 and the USTA Maryland District Maury Schwartzman Award for player development in 1995. 

     As a player, Glenn achieved his highest rankings in 2010, reaching #3 in Florida; #23 in the USA; and #79 in the World ITF rankings for Men’s 80 & Over division.  In 2000, he was inducted into the Potomac State College Athletic Hall of Fame for Outstanding Athletic Accomplishment. 

    As a tennis organizer, Glenn conducted countless adult and junior tennis leagues, tournaments, and team competitions in the Tri-State area. He also founded and directed the NJCAA Annual North Eastern Indoor Tennis Championships at ACM and served as the Western Maryland Regional USTA Vice President.

     Glenn was also an active Marathon runner in his later life, completing the Boston Marathon, The Marine Marathon & the New York Marathons. He ran 8 miles on his 88th birthday.

     He was a highly accomplished man but his greatest achievement was his family.

     Left to cherish in his memory are his children, Glenn Orrick "Rick" Workman, III and wife Mari of Ormond Beach, FL; Randall Lynn Workman and special friend Warren Faulkner of Mount Savage, MD; Amy Susan Rowan of Hollywood Beach, FL and Rodney Edward Workman of Lake Bluff, IL; his 10 grandchildren, Dr. Glenn Orrick Workman, IV and wife Carla  of Austin, TX; Jamie Pierce and husband Wyeth of Walnut Creek, CA; Meranda Englebert and husband Dan of Cumberland, MD; Leigh Ann Workman and partner Andy Holsinger of Eckhart, MD; Roseann Workman and partner Andy Davis of Frostburg, MD; Ian Rowan and wife Claire of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Brittnie Sue Rowan and husband Shawn McAskill of Pompano Beach, FL; Martine Alicia Workman and husband Josh Tokle of Seattle, WA; Rodney Edward Workman, Jr. of Elk, CA and his wife, Alexa; Mandy Lynn Workman and husband Justin Phillips of San Anselmo, CA:  25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

     The viewing will be on Wednesday, October 16 at the Markwood Funeral Home (111 S. Mineral St., Keyser, WV 26726), from 11:00 am – 1:00 PM. Funeral services will be at the Markwood Funeral Home at 1:00 PM.  Interment will be held in Queens Point Cemetery (48 White Way, Keyser, WV. 26726), immediately following the Service.

     In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Allegany College of Maryland, “Glenn O. Workman Forestry Scholarship Fund.”  The fund was initiated in his honor as a co-founder of the College’s Forestry Program.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Glenn O. Workman, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Allegany College of Maryland Foundation, 12401 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD   21502.
