Donald "Don" Sanders Obituary

Donald C. "Don" Sanders, 84, of Keyser, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. He will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, dedication to service, and the love he shared with family and friends.

Born on November 9, 1941, in Keyser, Don was the son of the late Chelcie L. Sanders and Ann Mae Kirk Sanders. A proud graduate of Keyser High School in 1959, he carried the values learned there throughout his life.

Don was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church, and he proudly served as a U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam War. His commitment to community service was evident through his involvement with the Boyce Houser Post #4 American Legion and VFW Post 675 in Queens Point, McCoole. For over 20 years, he volunteered at the Faith-In-Action Food Pantry and contributed his time at Helping Hands, embodying the spirit of generosity.

After retiring from A&P Grocery Store, Don worked at Markwood Funeral Home, where he provided support to grieving families. He was also a talented craftsman, owning and operating Don's Wood Shop, where he shared his woodworking skills with many. Don’s legacy is widespread in homes and businesses across Keyser..

Don is survived by his loving wife, Sandra "Sandy" Hedrick Sanders, whom he married on November 28, 1987. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis Harman, and her husband Bob of Keyser, as well as a cherished family of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepson, Phillip Sherman, Jr., who passed away on July 12, 2003.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Markwood Funeral Home on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. The funeral service will begin at 4:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Wayne Gosnell, with military honors provided by the Boyce Houser American Legion Post #41 and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Services will conclude at the funeral home, followed by interment at Potomac Memorial Gardens at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Faith-In-Action Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1073, Keyser, WV 26726, to honor Don’s enduring legacy of compassion and community service.

Donald C. "Don" Sanders leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, service, and craftsmanship. His spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
