Darling Dale Abernathy

     KEYSER, WV - Darling Dale Abernathy, 88, of Keyser, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024 at the Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Cumberland, MD.

     Born on January 10, 1936 in Emoryville, WV, he was the son of the late Charles William “Bud” and Grace Elizabeth (Reed) Abernathy. He is also preceded in death by his infant son, Brian Dale Abernathy and his brother, Charles Richard “Dick” Abernathy.

     Dale graduated from Elk Garden High School and was a member of the Rawlings United Methodist Church. A proud Korean and Vietnam Veteran who served for over 30 years in the United States Army before he retired as a 1st Sargent in the 351st unit in Romney, WV. After his time in the Military, he was employed as a construction worker and retired from the Laborer’s Union 616. He enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with his family. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

     Left to cherish in his memory are his beloved daughters, Rebecca Ann “Becky” Galloway and husband Lamar of Hickory, NC and Darla Jean Swiger and husband Steve of New Creek, WV; his grandchildren, Brianna Amtower, Bryan Amtower and wife Brittney, Jacob Sommerville and wife Cassiana and Joshua Sommerville and wife Bethany and his two sisters, Thelma J. Knotts and husband, Cliff of Elk Garden, WV and Dorothy E. Schonley of Oakland, MD. He was also survived by his 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

     Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home on Monday, July 15, 2024 from 11:00am -1:00pm. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 1:00pm with Reverend Randy Shoemaker officiating. Interment will be held in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Elk Garden, WV.
