Quentin Frederick “Coach” Sayers, Sr.
Quentin Frederick “Coach” Sayers, Sr., 89, of Valley View Lane, Keyser, WV, passed away Thursday November 16th at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Born March 24, 1928 at Pierce, WV, he was the son of the late Charles Oliver Sayers and Mable Mae (McCalment) Sayers. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Sayers, and his sister Arvilla Mae Sayers.
Quentin was a graduate of Piedmont High School in 1946, Potomac State College with Associate of Arts degree, Shepherd College with a Bachelor's Degree in 1950 and West Virginia University with his Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education in 1954.
Coach was an employee of the Mineral County Board of Education for 40 years. He taught at Elk Garden, Fort Ashby High School where he coached basketball, track, and baseball for over twenty years, and also taught at Keyser Middle School. During his coaching tender at Fort Ashby he had one of the highest winning percentages in the state in their class and was honored with the teacher of the year award.
He served in Japan and Korea with the U.S. Army in the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean conflict from 1950-52, where he received the Korean Service Metal w/1 Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Citation.
Quentin was a member of The Church of the Assumption in Keyser and an avid gardener and farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and a variety of sports like basketball, baseball and football.
Surviving are his son Quentin “Butch” Sayers, Jr. and wife Deborah (Rawlings) Sayers of Keyser; two granddaughters, Lorie Quinn (Sayers) Osborne and her husband Sean of Oregon and Autumn Dawn (Sayers) Phares and husband Arin of Keyser. Also surviving are his great grandson, Myles Quentin Danger Osborne and great granddaughter Alexandria “Allie” May Phares.

At his request there will be no public viewing or funeral service. Private Interment will be at Potomac Memorial Gardens.
