Barbara Anne (Rice) Athey
KEYSER, WV – Barbara Anne (Rice) Athey, 88, of Virginia Street, died Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at her Residence.
Born on March 14, 1930 in Keyser, she was a daughter of the late Claude E. Rice and Cora “Pauline” (Barr) Rice. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Fredrick Lee Athey, Sr.; her daughter, Martha A. Kasmier; her brothers, Paul Rice and Rock Rice and her sister, Betty DeVelbliss. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Barbara graduated from Potomac State College with an Associate of Arts Degree and was a Circulation Librarian for the Mineral County Library. She also started Kindergarten in 1960 for Keyser and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW Post#3518 Nancy Hanks Auxiliary and Kelly Mansfield Post #52 American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are her children, Carol Worgan and husband James of Westernport, MD and Fredrick “Freddie” Lee Athey, Jr. of Keyser; her grandchildren, Jennifer Oates and husband Jeff, James Worgan and wife Beth, Johnathon Worgan, Ross Kasmier and wife Dana, Sarah Jane Kasmier and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Markwood Funeral home Friday May 4, 2018 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 76 N. Davis Street, Keyser, Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 3:00 PM with a visitation one hour prior to the service. The service will be conducted by the Reverend Sally Bartling. Interment will follow in Queens Point Cemetery, Keyser.
