Planning your funeral requires careful consideration. After you have selected your funeral director, make an appointment with him. During your meeting, he will be more than happy to give you any information you will need at no cost to you. Every family is different, and not everyone wants the same type of funeral. Funeral practices are influenced by religious and cultural traditions, costs and personal preferences. These factors help determine whether the funeral will be elaborate or simple, public or private, religious or secular, and where it will be held. They also infuence whether the body will be present at the funeral, if there will be a viewing or visitation, and if so, whether the casket will be open or closed, and whether the remains will be buried or cremated. Among the choices you'll need to make are whether you want one of these basic types of funerals, or something in between. "Traditional," Full-Serviced Funeral, Direct Burial, Direct Cremation. When you have satisfied all your questions, it is time to arrange for a pre-planned funeral.

A pre-planned funeral is a written funeral plan which has been filed with the funeral director. This plan will fit your personal funeral needs and desires. It covers such things as how much money will be spent on you funeral, what sort of service will be held and where, and who will officiate the service. It also states what kind of funeral you desire. The plan can also outline what music will be performed, what clothing or jewelry you may wish to be buried in. It can also determine whether the funeral will be open to the public or to only a select group of your loved ones and friends. It may further state whether you wish to have the gift of flowers held to a minimum, requesting instead that the money which would have been spent on flowers to be donated to your favorite charity or service organization.

Whatever you want in connection with your funeral service and burial should be recorded in a pre-planning file. Once the file has been established, you will probably want to prepay this account. Usually the money is placed in a trust fund or an insurance trust in your name and the name of your funeral director. Insurance plans that you already own may be reassigned to the funeral director and used for your pre-planned funeral.

When you die, the proceeds from the account are immediately made available. This fund does not become part of the estate funds, subject to administration expenses or taxes in accordance with various state laws. Finally it should be noted that these funds are already available to you and your family, at the time of need.

After the pre-plan has been established and the predetermined sum deposited you will receive a Plan Agreement.
